7 woodcuts

Started in January, it took me a while to finish them but I’ve been wanting to add animals to my collection for a while so here they are, in order of appearance:

• 3 gulls: based on a photo taken on the island of Grand Manan, photo that I also sell as it is because I like the position of these gulls in relation to each other.
• Cat: initially it was just going to be a black and white silhouette of a cat and that’s how I engraved it, the quintessence of a cat in the window, but ultimately the color adds something more mysterious .
• En famille: this is not the image I thought I would use when I thought about what I was going to engrave this year but the one I had in mind turned out to be too detailed so I looked in my photos from years past and it was this one that I had totally forgotten. I like cows, thoughtful, quiet.
• Le coq: last year I went to an Airbnb and its owner had a lot of chickens in front of the house, it made people stop and she had even planned to organize a drawing competition for the neighborhood children so I I said to myself, why not make a rooster which is also the emblematic animal of France.
• Hi, there!: in the summer around Grand Manan Island you can often see seals coming out of the water and looking at the kayakers, it always makes me laugh and I look forward to them so this is an engraving for them (and for you!).
• Hibou: there are some in the forest in front of my house and they are in fact owls but owl makes me think of cabbage, knee, pou…, it ‘s a list that doesn’t make sens in English but in France, it a list of words ending in ou which do not take an x in the plural, a list that had to be learned by heart at school. So, it’s both a strange animal and a childhood memory.
• Look!: another photo taken in Grand Manan Island where there are a lot of cormorants and in this one, it’s as if one was showing the other what he was capable of doing (while in reality, that’s what they do to dry their wings), hence the title. I like cormorants, too!

7 xylogravures

Commencées en janvier, il m’a fallu un certain temps pour les finir mais je voulais depuis un moment ajouter des animaux à ma collection alors voila, dans l’ordre d’apparence:

• 3 gulls: basé sur une photo prise sur l’île de Grand Manan, photo que je vends aussi telle qu’elle parce que j’aime la position de ces mouettes les unes par rapport aux autres.
• Cat: au départ, ce devait juste être une silhouette de chat en noir et blanc et c’est comme cela que je l’avais gravée, la quintessence d’un chat à la fenêtre, mais finalement, la couleur ajoute quelque chose de plus mystérieux .
• En famille: ce n’est pas l’image que je pensais utiliser quand j’ai réfléchi à ce que j’allais graver cette année mais celle que j’avais en vue s’est avérée trop détaillée alors je suis allé voir dans mes photos des années passées et ça a été celle-ci que j’avais totalement oubliée.J’aime les vaches, songeuses, paisibles.
• Le coq: l’an dernier je suis allé dans un Airbnb et sa propriétaire avait beaucoup de poules devant la maison, ça faisait s’arrêter les gens et elle avait même prévu d’organiser un concours de dessins pour les enfants du quartier alors je me suis dit, tiens, pourquoi pas faire un coq qui est aussi l’animal emblématique de la France.
• Hi, there!: en été autour de l’île de Grand Manan, on peut souvent voir des phoques sortir de l’eau et regarder les kayakers, ça me fait toujours rire et je les attends avec impatience alors c’est une gravure pour eux (et pour vous !).
• Hibou: il y en a dans le forêt en face de chez moi et ce sont en fait des chouettes mais hibou me fait penser à chou, genou, pou…, la liste des mots en ou qui ne prennent pas de x au pluriel, liste qu’il fallait apprendre par coeur à l’école. C’est donc un animal étrange et un souvenir d’enfance.
• Look!: encore une photo prise à Grand Manan où il y a beaucoup de cormorants et sur celle-ci, c’est comme si l’un montrait à l’autre ce qu’il était capable de faire (alors qu’en réalité, c’est ce qu’ils font pour se sécher les ailes), d’où le titre.J’aime aussi les cormorants!
