Welling Court 150 murals
To see the Welling Court 150 murals, the largest public space dedicated to this art in NYC if not in the USA, you will need to go to Astoria in Queens.
If you like walking, you just have to follow Walk in NYC # 6, along the East River, part 3. It starts on Roosevelt Island and explores this part of the city.
The murals will be about halfway through the walk, just past Socrates Park which houses contemporary sculptures.
Both locations are free to visit.
The Welling Court murals project began in 2009 when locals gathered at Ad Hoc Art, a street art gallery in Bushwick. They wanted to ask artists to come up with ideas to make their neighborhood more pleasant.
It only took a few months for the first murals to appear, about forty in all.
Since then, in June and annually, they are covered by others and gradually colonize all the walls of the district. This means that from one year to the next, you will never see the same works.
In 2017 for example, 150 artists from New York but also from around the world worked there. Some very famous, some beginners.
And it indeed transformed the neighborhood, as you’ll see !
From there, you can either walk a little bit more and you’ll be in Astoria Greek neighborhood with its numerous restaurants, or walk back to a ferry that will transport you somewhere else along the East River.

Pour voir les 150 muraux de Welling Court, le plus grand espace public dédié à cet art à NYC et peut-être aux USA, il vous faudra aller à Astoria dans le Queens.
Si vous aimez marcher, il vous suffit de suivre la Promenade à NYC numéro 6, le long de l’East River, partie 3. Elle vous fera découvrir cette partie de la ville en partant de Roosevelt Island.
Les muraux seront à peu près à mi-chemin de la promenade, juste après le parc Socrate qui abrite des sculptures contemporaines.

Le projet des muraux de Welling Court a commencé en 2009 quand des habitants du quartier se sont retrouvés à Ad Hoc Art, une galerie des arts de la rue située à Bushwick. Ils venaient demander aux artistes de trouver des idées pour rendre leur quartier plus agréable.
Il ne fallut que quelques mois pour que les premiers muraux apparaissent, une quarantaine en tout.
Depuis, en juin et annuellement, ils sont recouverts par d’autres et colonisent peu à peu tous les murs du quartier. C’est dire que d’une année à l’autre, vous ne verrez jamais les mêmes oeuvres.
En 2017 par exemple, 150 artistes venus de New York mais aussi du monde entier ont travaillé là. Certains très connus, certains débutants.
Et cela a effectivement transformé le quartier comme vous pourrez le constater !
De là, vous pourrez soit marcher encore un peu et vous serez dans le quartier grec d’Astoria avec ses nombreux restaurants, soit revenir sur vos pas pour trouver un ferry qui vous transportera ailleurs le long de l’East River.
