Graceland Cemetery, serene but hunted?

It is at Graceland Cemetery, a large rural cemetery north of Chicago, that many of the people who shaped the city are buried.

Designed as a park preserving natural places, there are so many different trees surrounding the graves that it has become an arboretum and therefore a serene place quite suitable for walking.

At the beginning of the 20th century, moreover, there were so many visitors that entries were limited to Sundays and public holidays unless you had a pass. Little by little, however, the fashion for coming there faded and the paths have now regained their calm.

In any case, it is an astonishing and very romantic place on the edge of small Willowmere Lake which is located at its northern end, where the most extravagant tombs of the place are also concentrated, often designed by famous architects. Some rest not far from their creations, by the way.

If you arrive through the main entrance which is located at the intersection of Clark Street and Irving Park Road, you can obtain a map of the premises at the information desk located there. It will tell you who is where if you are looking for a particular family, but you can also let yourself be guided by your curiosity, remembering to go around the lake and pass near the chapel.

It is not far from this chapel that you will find the glass protected statue of Inez Clarke, a 6-year-old child who was allegedly killed by lightning during a picnic. It is said that she sometimes disappears from this glass cage when there is a storm, and that her ghost then plays in the cemetery.

The problem is that it seems Inez Clarke never existed under that name and that the child buried there died of diphtheria. Many articles have been written on this subject, but none seem to have a definitive answer which is undoubtedly the characteristic of ghosts!

You can also go see the rather sinister statue of Dexter Graves, the Eternal Silence, which is said to give you an idea of ​​your own death when you look at it. Here too, several articles have been written on the subject.

In any case, if you go to Graceland Cemetery, it will be a completely unusual visit and you will reconnect with an ancient tradition!

You can even combine this visit with that of two adjacent neighborhoods if you follow Walk in Chicago # 8, Ravenswood, Graceland and Buena Park!

Le cimetière Graceland, serein mais hanté ?

C’est à Graceland Cemetery, un grand cimetière rural au nord de Chicago, que sont enterrés beaucoup des personnalités qui ont façonnés la ville.

Conçu comme un parc préservant des endroits naturels, il y a là tant d’arbres différents qui entourent les tombes que c’est devenu un arboretum et donc un endroit serein tout à fait propice à la marche.

Au début du 20ième siècle d’ailleurs, il y avait tellement de visiteurs que les entrées furent limitées aux dimanches et jours fériés à moins d’avoir un passe. Peu à peu cependant, la mode de venir se promener là s’estompa et les allées ont maintenant retrouvé leur calme.

C’est en tout cas un endroit étonnant et très romantique aux abords du petit Lac Willowmere qui se trouve à son extrémité nord, là où se concentrent aussi les tombes les plus extravagantes de l’endroit, souvent concues par des architectes célèbres. Certains reposent d’ailleurs non loin de leurs créations.

Si vous arrivez par l’entrée principale qui se situe à l’intersection de Clark Street et Irving Park Road, vous pourrez vous procurez un plan de lieux au bureau d’information qui se trouve là. Il vous indiquera qui est où si vous recherchez une famille particulière. Vous pouvez aussi vous laisser guider par votre curiosité en n’oubliant cependant pas d’aller faire le tour du lac et de passer près de la chapelle.

C’est non loin de cette chapelle que vous trouverez la statue sous verre d’Inez Clarke, une enfant de 6 ans qui aurait été tuée par un éclair lors d’un pique-nique. On dit qu’elle disparait parfois de cette cage en verre quand il y a un orage et que son fantôme joue alors dans le cimetière.

Le problème, c’est qu’il semble qu’Inez Clarke n’ait jamais existé sous ce nom et que l’enfant enterré là soit morte de diphtérie. Beaucoup d’articles ont éte écrit à ce sujet mais aucun ne semble avoir une réponse définitive ce qui est sans doute la caractèristique des fantômes!

Vous pouvez aussi aller voir la statue plutôt sinistre de Dexter Graves, l’Eternel Silence, qui, parait-il, vous donnera une idée de votre propre mort quand vous la regardez en face. Là aussi, plusieurs articles ont été écrit sur le sujet.

Dans tous les cas, si vous allez à Graceland Cemetery, ce sera une visite tout à fait insolite et vous renouerez avec une tradition ancienne!

Vous pouvez même combiner cette visite avec celle de deux quartiers adjacents si vous suivez la Promenade à Chicago numéro 8, Ravenswood, Graceland et Buena Park!
